Executive Coaching FAQs
Q: What is coaching and how can it help me?
Coaching starts with you: your goals, your strengths, your priorities. It's all about taking you where you want to go. As your coach, I provide the structure to help you get there. I'm an objective partner who listens, provides insight and feedback, and asks the right questions to help you:
- Find a solution to a perplexing problem
- Discover new ideas and approaches
- Progress faster than you can on your own
- Get "unstuck"
- Help you stay on track
Q: How does the coaching process work?
We start with you: your goals, your vision, your future. Once we establish your goals for our work together, we jump right in. I offer several coaching strategies, so you can choose the one that works best for you. Most clients start by making a three-month commitment, which consists of two hours of coaching per month plus ongoing phone and e-mail support.
We'll use structured conversations, assignments and other coaching tools to help you achieve the personal growth and real change you desire. During our conversations, we'll work to identify and remove barriers to success; discover new possibilities; and monitor your progress. Every session is designed to help you keep moving forward, closer to your goals.
Q: Will you tell me what I should do?
I wish it were that easy! Only you can make the behavior-changing decisions that are right for you. But with my help, you can find your own solutions faster, so you can move forward faster and with greater confidence.
Q: How is coaching different than training?
Training is a learning approach designed to deliver "knowledge" to an individual or group through content, discussion and activity. Coaching is a highly personalized version of learning that enables you to learn new ways to approach "live" work experiences.
Q: How is coaching different than consulting?
Consultants are hired to help assess situations and make recommendations. Coaches work with you to identify alternatives and help you choose the one that makes the most sense for you. When asked, or when appropriate, I will share my opinion, but to achieve real, lasting change, you don't need someone to simply tell you what to do. You need the confidence to make the right choices for yourself.
Q: Are the things we discuss kept confidential?
Absolutely. I abide by the International Coach Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics in my practice, which means that everything discussed in a coaching conversation is kept in utmost confidence.
Q: How long does a coaching relationship last?
That depends on you and your goals. To make real lasting change, a three-month coaching commitment is generally the best way to start. I ask my clients to set 90-day goals for themselves when we start working together. After that, you can rely on Water's Edge Coaching to help with any other transitions or challenges as you need it. Check out the variety of coaching strategies to see which one is right for you.
Q: Is coaching some "new age" approach to dealing with life's challenges?
Every coach has a unique coaching style, but honestly, I don't have a "new age" bone in my body! My coaching practice is firmly grounded in the principles of psychology, motivational theory, as well as 25 years of experience as an HR executive, trainer and facilitator. I'm committed to helping you achieve the motivation to make your work more engaging and fulfilling.
